Lunuganga Estate, the former iconic country house of renowned Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa. The property was originally a cinnamon estate during the Dutch era and subsequently a rubber plantation under the British. In 1948, the small house in the estate was given on rent to the local tax collector and in 1949 bought over by Geoffrey Bawa with the intention of converting the estate bungalow into a weekend house and creating a tropical version of an European country house. Currently Lunuganga is overseen by a group of Bawa’s close friends, who form the Lunuganga Trust. The gardens are now open to the public and the buildings on the estate are run as a seasonal country house hotel.Teardrop Hotels (owned by 4 partners, Michael, Charlie, Henry and Viraj Premasinghe) manage the property. They will bring in their successful style of boutique hotel management to the property and offer their luxury hotel service to guests who are keen to experience the unique country estate living style envisioned by Geoffrey Bawa.”
