Horathapola Coconut Estate is 50 acres of tranquility, nestled within the peaceful backdrop of rural Sri Lanka. Built a century ago, in 1922, Horathapola Coconut Estate is an ancestral home which has been lovingly restored into a holiday home. Featuring touches of modern luxury that compliment the stateliness of its colonial architecture, the estate beckons holiday seekers in search of a stylish and peaceful escape, away from the crowds. Horathapola Coconut Estate’s heritage past is reflected in the priceless collection of Sri Lankan antique furniture found within, some as old as the estate itself. The lush estate garden includes a swimming pool, jacuzzi, trails, and is full of vibrant birdlife. Beyond the garden, the lush emerald green extends into a live organic estate.
Horathapola Coconut Estate is within an hour’s drive from the airport. Escape to the tranquil haven while you recover from jetlag, or simply spend a few relaxing days being spoiled by our staff and let the love affair with Sri Lanka begin!
Accommodation:
Enjoy beautiful, light-filled, expansive rooms and living areas, lovingly decorated with the finest linens and heirloom furniture dating back many generations. The estate features 5 spacious bedrooms with en-suite, oversized bathrooms. Each room has its unique view of the verdant garden, and ample seclusion to be found within gently shaded balconies, patios and verandas. A separate two-bedroom lodge with its own garden offers a more private retreat for families.
Four of the five bedrooms are over 300 square feet, and all feature oversized bathrooms. Each room extends into a spacious, private sitting area that looks out to a vista of foliage.
All rooms have their own design aesthetic and feature unique pieces of antique furniture. High ceilings, hand-carved large four-poster beds, air-conditioning as well as fans, and airy en-suite bathrooms with hot water are standard amenities.
Pool and garden:
Wake up to cheerful bird songs from countless species of birds – Barbets, Orioles, Parrots, Woodpeckers, Doves, Drongos and Flycatchers as they greet the dawn that washes over Horathapola Coconut Estate in soft, golden hues. The vast, immaculately manicured garden extends into the plantation, where pepper, cashew, clove, nutmeg, cinnamon, lemongrass and many more tropical herbs and spices are grown organically. Neatly planted rows of organic coconut, cashew, jackfruit, soursop, tamarind, mango, and guava flourish on the estate, while our very own rice paddy skirts the periphery.
An early morning walk along that run across the estate is a great way to begin your day or just to immerse in the beautiful greenery that much of rural Sri Lanka is comprised of. You could even ‘pluck’ your own fruit platter for breakfast!
On warm days (and Sri Lanka has no shortage of those!), our pool is an ideal refuge. Find a shady alcove under the trees and curl up with a book, or just take it easy and have a nap outdoors. For a bit more indulgence, pop open a bottle of bubbly and hop into the Jacuzzi!
We’ve found that the long gap between lunch and dinner can be irksome for foodies. So, in true colonial style, afternoon tea is a celebrated event at Horathapola Coconut Estate. From homemade cheesecake with a pot of organic tea, to a chilled brew to go with our our signature ‘cheese-toast’, our kitchen takes meals seriously. In fact, those morning walks would be essential considering what our chef has in store for you!
